An act relating to required vaccines for public school students.

Be it enacted by the Youth Model Legislature of the State of New Jersey that the seasonal influenza vaccine be added to the list of required vaccines for students attending public government funded schools.

Section I:

Students must receive the influenza vaccine before the start of flu season in public schools.

Section II:

Flu season is defined as the start of December to the end of March by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Section III:

A public school is defined as a school funded with tax revenue and administered by a government or governmental agency.

Section IV:

The seasonal influenza vaccine is defined as either the flu shot containing the killed virus (Trivalent Influenza Vaccine) or the nasal spray vaccine (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine), verified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Section V:

A child may be exempt from the vaccine for medical reasons if a written statement is submitted to the school from a licensed physician or an advanced practice nurse.

Section VI:

A child may be exempt from the vaccine for religious reasons if a written statement is submitted to the school from the parent or guardian of the student.

Section VII:

Accepted documents for evidence of immunization include an official school record, a public health department record, a certificate signed by a license physician or advanced practice nurse, or an official record from the New Jersey Immunization Information System.

     
Statement of Intent: The purpose of this Bill is to prevent the spread of the highly contagious respiratory illness, Seasonal Influenza among students and the people they come in contact with.

Effective Date: This Bill shall take effect in the school year of 2010 to 2011.

Financial Statement: $25,000 for the rewriting and redistribution of the law books.
