An act relating to enabling persons to vote in primary elections prior to turning 18.
Be it enacted by the Youth Model Legislature of the State of New Jersey that 17-year-olds will be eligible to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 years of age in the corresponding general election.
Section I:
Amend Article II Section I of the New Jersey Constitution by inserting after paragraph 7 the following paragraph: "A person that is 17 years of age, and meets New Jersey, voting eligibility requirements, may register to vote at a state primary election,or presidential primary election, prior to a general election at which the person will be 18 years of age.”
Statement of Intent: The purpose of this Bill is is to lower the voting age for primary elections.
Effective Date: This Bill shall take effect on June 1, 2012.
Financial Statement: The cost of this bill shall be $5,000 for rewriting and redistribution of the law books.
